Ideal for: Families and couples who want private vehicle flexibility across nine days

The Honest Case for This Route

Kenya has two safari worlds and most visitors only see one. The southern circuit, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, and the Masai Mara, is the one that appears on most itineraries. The northern circuit, Samburu in particular, holds species that do not exist in the south and a landscape that looks and feels completely different from open savannah. This nine-day itinerary connects both worlds.

You start at Amboseli under Kilimanjaro. You drive to Lake Naivasha for a freshwater boat safari unlike anything else in Kenya. You go north to Samburu for the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, and gerenuk. You come back south through Lake Nakuru’s rhino sanctuary. And you finish at the Masai Mara.

Private means your schedule is yours. Budget and mid-range accommodation means this circuit does not require a luxury budget. The wildlife experience is the same across tiers. The accommodation is the variable.

Tipping Guide (per person): Guide: USD 10-20/day x 8 days = approx. USD 80-160 total
Camp and lodge staff (shared): USD 5-10/day x 8 days = approx. USD 40-80 total
Suggested total tip budget per person: USD 120-240
Tips are discretionary. They are meaningful to guides and camp staff and appreciated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is the Samburu Special Five?

The Samburu Special Five are five species adapted to Kenya’s dry northern zone that are not reliably found in the southern parks: reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich. The reticulated giraffe has a dramatically different coat from the Masai giraffe. The Grevy’s zebra is significantly larger than the plains zebra. The gerenuk browses standing upright on its hind legs. None of these are variations on familiar species; they are genuinely different animals.

Is Lake Naivasha worth a full night or is it just a stop?

A full night at Lake Naivasha gives you an afternoon boat ride plus a morning to explore the lake area before heading north to Samburu. The boat ride itself, with hippos, fish eagles, and Crescent Island as an optional add-on, is one of Kenya’s most distinctive wildlife experiences. It is not a stop. It is a destination that adds a freshwater dimension to a circuit that is otherwise entirely land-based.

Can I add more Masai Mara time?

Yes. The Masai Mara gets one night on this route, giving two game drives. If the Mara is your priority, contact us and we restructure the itinerary to add a second Mara night by adjusting one of the other destinations. Private safaris are fully flexible in the planning phase.

What accommodation is available at Lake Naivasha?

Budget options include Crayfish Camp and Camp Carnelley’s, both well-regarded lakeside properties at accessible price points. Mid-range includes Enashipai Resort, Sawela Lodge, and Naivasha Sopa Lodge. Luxury includes Great Rift Valley Lodge and Hippo Point Estate. All are within easy reach of the lake for the afternoon boat ride.

Common Safari Planning Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Not telling the guide about Samburu Special Five priorities before departure

Fix: If there is a specific species on your list, such as the gerenuk’s feeding posture or a Grevy’s zebra at close range, tell your guide before the Samburu morning drive. They adjust the route accordingly.

Mistake 2: Planning an international departure from Nairobi on the afternoon of day 9

Fix: The Masai Mara to Nairobi drive is five to six hours. An early morning Mara departure can reach Nairobi by early afternoon. Evening international flights are achievable but require early departure without a morning game drive. Confirm timing with your guide on day 8.

Mistake 3: Treating the Naivasha boat ride as optional on day 3

Fix: The boat ride is included and it is the defining experience of the Naivasha day. Guests who skip it because they are tired from the Amboseli drive consistently regret missing it. Plan to be on the water by 15:00 on day 3 and let the guide manage the transit timing.

Mistake 4: Arriving at Samburu expecting it to look like a smaller version of the Mara

Fix: Samburu is a dry, acacia scrubland ecosystem that looks and feels completely different from the Masai Mara’s open grassland. The species are different. The driving is different. The light is different. Arrive with Samburu on its own terms and it is one of Kenya’s best surprises.
