The Honest Case for Serengeti and Ngorongoro
If you have four days in Tanzania, this is the right two-park combination. The Serengeti is Africa’s most famous wildlife destination for a reason: 14,763 square kilometres of open plains, a Great Migration that has moved across this landscape for millions of years, and year-round lion, leopard, and cheetah populations in one of their strongest habitats.
The Ngorongoro Crater adds something the Serengeti cannot deliver in the same way. The crater floor is 260 square kilometres enclosed by ancient caldera walls 600 metres high. Approximately 25,000 large mammals live permanently on the floor in concentrations that make wildlife viewing genuinely unlike anywhere else in Africa. The black rhino population inside the crater is protected and monitored by rangers, making it one of the most reliably viewable black rhino populations on the continent. All five Big Five species have been sighted on the crater floor in a single day’s drive.
Budget and mid-range accommodation options exist for both parks. The guide quality and park access are the same regardless of which tier you choose.
Bienvenido budget note: Budget rim accommodation at Ngorongoro means a comfortable hotel on the crater rim with views of the caldera. It is not the same as a luxury lodge, but it is entirely adequate and the crater access and game drive quality are identical.
Tipping Guide (per person): Guide: USD 15-20/day x 3 days = approx. USD 45-60 total
Camp and lodge staff (shared): USD 5-10/day x 3 days = approx. USD 15-30 total
Suggested total tip budget per person: USD 60-90

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there budget accommodation available for this safari?
Yes. Both the Serengeti and Ngorongoro rim have budget and mid-range accommodation options. Serengeti budget options include public campsites with basic facilities or mid-range tented camps in the Seronera area. Ngorongoro rim budget options include hotels in the Karatu area below the rim, with a drive up to the descent gate each morning. Contact us for a budget-tier breakdown at time of booking.
Is the Big Five possible in the Ngorongoro Crater in one day?
All five Big Five species are resident on the crater floor and sightings of all five in a single game drive are possible. It is not guaranteed, but the crater’s enclosed 260-square-kilometre floor and the high density of approximately 25,000 mammals make it the most likely single location in Tanzania to see all five in one day. Black rhino are the rarest and most sought-after; they are typically found in the Lerai Forest area before 09:00.
Why is there no giraffe in the Ngorongoro Crater?
The crater’s steep walls are difficult for giraffes to descend and ascend, and the crater floor is primarily short-grass plains without the tall acacia trees that giraffes browse. Giraffes are abundant in the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area once you are above the crater rim.
Do I need a Tanzania visa?
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Tanzania. An electronic visa is available through the Tanzania Immigration Services portal before travel. Requirements and fees vary by nationality. Verify your specific requirements before booking. We can advise on the process but cannot arrange visas on your behalf.

Common Safari Planning Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Descending the Ngorongoro Crater after 09:00
Fix: The 6-hour limit on crater floor time and the early morning wildlife activity window make the descent timing the most critical decision of the whole trip. A 07:00 descent gives you until 13:00 on the floor, covering the best predator and rhino activity hours. A 10:00 descent wastes the morning.
Mistake 2: Not asking the guide where the Migration herds are before departing Arusha
Fix: The guide can tell you specifically where the herds are on your travel dates and how they plan to position in the Serengeti. That information helps you understand what to expect from each day.
Mistake 3: Not packing a warm layer for the Ngorongoro rim
Fix: The rim is at 2,200 metres and mornings are cold. Packed at the bottom of the main bag does not help at 06:00 on the way to the descent gate.
Mistake 4: Treating an Olduvai Gorge stop as automatic on the Ngorongoro transit
Fix: The gorge is near the transit road but the museum visit takes about 45 minutes. If paleoanthropology is of interest, tell your guide before day 3 so it can be timed correctly. If it is not of interest, the transit road drives past without stopping.
