What Three Days in the Mara Delivers

Three days is enough for a genuine Masai Mara experience and not a day more than the minimum. A 2-night stay gives three game drives: an afternoon arrival drive, two drives across the full day 2, and a morning departure drive on day 3. That is enough time to cover the main wildlife corridors, find the big cat families that hold territories in the reserve, and be in position near the Mara River for a crossing if the herds are moving.

The group joining format keeps the cost at its most accessible point. Budget accommodation and group travel means this is one of the most affordable ways to experience genuinely world-class wildlife. The guide quality, vehicle standard, and park access are the same as on more expensive itineraries. Maximum 8 guests per vehicle ensures every seat has an unobstructed view.

The honest note: three days does not allow the depth that five or seven days provides. You will not cover every zone of the reserve. You will not spend three mornings at the same cheetah family building photographic sequences. What you will get is a complete, honest, and memorable introduction to one of Africa’s great wildlife destinations.

Tipping Guide (per person): Guide: USD 10-15/day x 2 days = approx. USD 20-30 total
Camp and lodge staff (shared): USD 5-10/day x 2 days = approx. USD 10-20 total
Suggested total tip budget per person: USD 30-50
Tips are discretionary and appreciated.

Best Time to Visit

Season Months What to Expect Our Recommendation
Migration Peak Jul to Oct River crossings possible (not guaranteed on any day); entry fees highest Peak demand. Crossings are spectacular when they happen. Book ahead.
Calving Season Jan to Mar Migration in southern Serengeti, not the Mara; Mara predators at their most active Best value. Excellent wildlife. Quieter camps. Our most recommended period.
Short Rains Nov to Dec Green Mara; lower entry fees; good resident wildlife Good option. Lower cost.
Long Rains Apr to May Some road challenges; dispersed wildlife Low season. Budget pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is park entry so much more expensive July to December?

The Masai Mara entry fee is set by Narok County government, not by operators. The fee structure as of 2026 is USD 100 per adult for January to June and USD 200 per adult for July to December. The second-half rate reflects peak season demand driven by the Great Migration. Bienvenido Kenya Safaris includes all park fees in the quoted price. There are no hidden park fee additions.

What does group joining mean for my privacy?

You share the vehicle with a maximum of seven other guests you may not know. You share the same camp or lodge. Game drive decisions are made collectively, with the guide balancing the group’s interests. If you want the vehicle entirely to yourself, the private safari version of this itinerary gives you that at a higher cost. The group joining format works well for most solo travellers and couples who are comfortable with a small social dynamic.

Is the Great Migration guaranteed?

No. The Migration follows a year-round cycle. River crossings in the Masai Mara occur from approximately July to October, but exact dates vary by two to four weeks each year. Outside this window, the Migration is in the Serengeti. The Masai Mara’s resident wildlife is outstanding regardless of Migration status. Go with the resident wildlife as your expectation and the crossing, if it happens, is a bonus.

Can I request a specific camp?

On group joining departures, accommodation is pre-selected based on the tier you book. If you have a specific property in mind, contact us before booking to confirm whether it can be included in your departure date.

What happens after you enquire:
Step 1: We send you available joining dates for your travel window within 24 hours.
Step 2: We confirm your accommodation tier and send a detailed quote.
Step 3: You secure your space with a deposit and receive your pre-departure information.

Common Safari Planning Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Arriving in Nairobi on departure day

Fix: Build a buffer night in Nairobi before the safari. Missing the day 1 group pickup cannot be recovered on a 3-day itinerary.

Mistake 2: Planning a tight international connection on day 3

Fix: The Nairobi return arrives in the early to mid-afternoon. Evening international flights are achievable. Same-day international connections before 17:00 are risky.

Mistake 3: Expecting the Migration to be in the Mara outside July to October

Fix: The Migration is a year-round cycle. The dramatic Mara river crossings occur in the second half of the year. The Mara’s resident wildlife is excellent in every month regardless.

Mistake 4: Not asking about the balloon safari before the trip

Fix: Balloon safari capacity is limited and must be booked the evening before. If this is important to you, tell us before the departure date so we can confirm availability.
