Ideal for: Fit travellers comfortable walking 6 to 8 hours on sustained uphill terrain
Ideal for: Budget-conscious trekkers who want to experience Mount Kenya without overnight costs
Not ideal: those expecting to summit; Point Lenana requires a minimum 2-night acclimatisation stay
Not ideal: those who are not physically prepared; this is a 640m elevation gain day hike

The Honest Case for a Mount Kenya Day Hike

Africa’s second-highest mountain starts at 5,199m. The Sirimon Gate on the northwest side sits at 2,660m, already higher than most European mountain passes. Old Moses Camp at 3,300m is well into the high-altitude moorland zone where giant lobelias and groundsels replace the forest. On a clear day, the central peaks are visible from Old Moses.

This is not a summit trip. That distinction matters. Attempting Point Lenana (4,985m) without overnight acclimatisation carries real altitude sickness risk and we do not offer it. What a 1-day Sirimon hike delivers is a strenuous, rewarding, and genuine introduction to Africa’s second-highest mountain inside a single long day from Nairobi. The wildlife in the lower forest, the transition through the bamboo zone, the dramatic opening of the moorland above the treeline, and the views of Batian and Nelion from Old Moses are the experience.

Budget note: The 1-day trek is the most cost-efficient Mount Kenya experience we offer. One day of park fees (USD 80 non-resident), one guide, transport, and a packed lunch. No overnight accommodation, no porter or cook costs. It is the right starting point for trekkers who want to assess Mount Kenya before committing to a multi-day itinerary.

Tipping guide (1-day, guide only): Mountain guide: USD 10 to 15 for the day, paid in cash at the end of the hike.
Porters and cook are not included on the 1-day itinerary; tipping applies to the guide only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reach Point Lenana on a 1-day hike?

No. Point Lenana at 4,985m requires overnight acclimatisation at altitude. Driving from Nairobi (1,670m) and attempting 4,985m in a single day carries a high risk of acute mountain sickness. We do not offer Lenana on a 1-day itinerary. Our 4-day, 5-day, and 6-day treks are designed for Lenana with appropriate acclimatisation.

What is the park entry fee for Mount Kenya?

KWS non-resident adult entry is currently USD 80 per person per day (as of the October 2025 KWS fee schedule). This is included in all Bienvenido Kenya Safaris Mount Kenya packages. Fees are subject to change; confirm current rates at booking.

Is this suitable for beginners?

For fit beginners, yes. The trail is not technically difficult. It is a sustained uphill walk of 640m over 9km. Good cardiovascular fitness matters more than prior trekking experience. If you can comfortably walk 2 to 3 hours on hilly terrain without stopping, you are physically ready for this hike.

What wildlife can I see?

The Sirimon forest holds buffalo, elephant, black-and-white colobus monkey, and various forest birds. Your guide manages any wildlife encounters. The moorland above the treeline holds mountain reedbuck, hyrax, and raptors including the augur buzzard. Wildlife sightings are common but never guaranteed.

Common Trekking Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Leaving Nairobi too late

Fix: A 05:00 Nairobi departure reaches Sirimon Gate by 09:00 to 09:30 and Old Moses by 13:00, leaving time for descent and return before dark. Leaving at 07:00 or later creates a very rushed day.

Mistake 2: Wearing cotton clothing

Fix: Cotton gets wet and stays wet. At 3,300m in mist or rain, wet cotton causes rapid heat loss. Synthetic or merino wool layers only.

Mistake 3: Not drinking enough water

Fix: High altitude increases fluid loss. Aim for 3 to 4 litres through the day. Most people drink too little on a mountain day hike.

Mistake 4: Ignoring altitude symptoms at Old Moses

Fix: A mild headache at 3,300m is common and resolves on descent. Headache combined with nausea and poor coordination is not mild. Tell your guide and start descending.

⚠  Altitude and health note: General guidance only. Not medical advice. Consult a travel medicine clinic before any high-altitude trek.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a genuine risk above 3,000m. Headache, nausea, fatigue, and dizziness are the warning signs. Never ascend further when symptoms are present.
‘Climb high, sleep low’ is the cardinal acclimatisation rule. Your guide applies this on all Bienvenido Mount Kenya treks.
Severe altitude illness (HACE or HAPE) is a medical emergency. The only treatment is immediate descent.
Diamox (Acetazolamide) is used by some trekkers for altitude sickness prevention. Ask your doctor before travel.
Travel insurance with high-altitude trekking cover and emergency evacuation is required as a condition of booking with us. A KWS mountain rescue fee applies and is included in our package price.
Certain medical conditions may contraindicate high-altitude trekking. Consult your doctor if you have heart disease, severe asthma, or have had recent surgery.
